We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to take immediate action to investigate the suspicious death of Petar Sutovic, a British citizen who was born 1st August 1979 in London, England and who met his premature death at the age of 24 in Belgrade, Serbia. The British authorities made a formal request to the Serbian authorities for the following: 1. British police officers to examine the physical evidence. 2. To allow discussion with the Serbian investigators as to their investigations and findings. 3. To facilitate a review of the evidence gathered and to the conclusions drawn from the evidence. This request was formally accepted by the Serbian authorities in May 2007. However, no action has been taken. Who is responsible and who can be held accountable for this unforgivable delay A formal inquest was opened and adjourned on 3rd July, 2006. The inquest cannot be heard until the above has taken place. The purpose of an inquest is to assist the families and to find out as many answers as possible as to the circumstances that led to the death. The inquest serves no purpose without a full official investigation by the appropriate authorities, namely the police. Petar\'s case is not unique, there are thousands of families whose human rights have been violated and who have been denied justice. It is common knowledge that the public travels abroad frequently, be it on holiday, on business trips, gap years, visiting second homes, and expats living abroad. The government has a responsibility to protect their citizens, wherever they may be. The law is well established: when a British subject dies abroad and the body is repatriated to the UK, the coroner who holds jurisdiction of the port of entry has jurisdiction over the body of the deceased. The coroner has an obligation to communicate with the family of the deceased and to ascertain where the burial will take place. An investigation must be conducted in the same manner as though the death had occurred in this country, with full participation in the investigation by the police. Why has the law been flouted by those in authority The British public must have faith in our government and our justice system. Justice must be transparent and must be seen to be done.
