Name: Michelle Higgins on Jan 3, 2007ZIP code: 12401Comments: We need public education about pesticides and backyard burning in Ulster County. Schools should not be planning pesticide use this spring as there is a NY Schools no chemical policy in force effective February 2006 but they were allowed to use any supplies they still had. Please make sure this will not happen. My neigbors get up at 4.30am to burn trash full of dioxitins - please get some local public ed. - signs outside the firehouse would help, no need for big budget.Flag

Name: Heinz Insu Fenkl on Feb 3, 2007ZIP code: 12601Comments: I teach at SUNY New Paltz and spend time in the village with my daughter quite regularly, so I am signing this petition even when my residence is Poughkeepsie. When I was a child in Korea, the government encouraged us to run behind the trucks that came into our town spraying clouds of DDT for mosquito control and "disinfection." The government thought this informal policy would help delouse urban children. I ran in those white plumes many, many times with my friends, flailing my arms, breathing deeply, and making the white dust waft over my body. I now have chronic respiratory problems, and several of those childhood friends have died of cancer. My father, who served in Vietnam in areas defoliated with Agent Orange, also died of cancer. I cannot attest, in stronger terms, to the long-range consequences of even the most well-intentioned uses of toxic pesticides.Flag
