On Sunday September 8th 2013, the Express Tribune, Dawn and The News carried full page advertisements taken out by Mr. Sharjeel Memon, the Information Minister of Sindh, congratulating President Zardari on completing his term of office and highlighting his achievements. Although the ad did not benefit the citizens of this province in any way, yet it was paid for by its taxpayers. It is a classic example of our public officials’ inability to separate personal and public interest. The issue here is not the cost of the advertisement – it is about the abuse of power, and of challenging the culture of impunity that prevails in our society in the absence of public outrage over the blatantly unethical actions of our elected (and non-elected) officials. This petition demands of the Chief Minister of Sindh to recover the cost of the advertisement from the Information Minister of Sindh and reimburse the Government immediately, and ensure that the refund is confirmed by official notification.
