| 1160 | Tracy Harwood | This is a really important time for fair trade as people are so much more aware of this agenda. Now it must be promoted by world leaders at G8. |

| 1177 | Maneesh Pangasa | Free trade has some benefits but all too often products made in Chinese sweat shops and assembled by children are imported into the U.S.A. Last I checked China still does not have child labor laws -- is a communist country, and even when children aren't making the products workers in China are being paid less. That is why U.S. companies keep shipping American jobs overseas to replace U.S. workers who sometimes join labor unions to get better wages and working conditions to countries with worse working conditions and lower wages.
They can then generate higher profit and sometimes they can avoid safety regulations -- when they operate overseas they can even evade paying taxes and operate in tax havens. Do business in the U.S. and not pay taxes. That is wrong.
Benefits of free trade are that U.S. companies can ship their products overseas without paying tariffs and likewise other countries can import their goods into U.S. tariff free.
However, there are the issues as raised of how it affects U.S. workers -- how U.S. companies fire their workers and send jobs overseas to make their products and then assemble them overseas and re-ship the finished goods into U.S.
The issues of foreign workers being underpaid and having worse working conditions. Issues of children sometimes being made to work in these other countries that lack child labor laws.
Free trade is good if its also fair. FREE AND FAIR TRADE ARE GREAT. However, free trade that is unfair I oppose. |
