Name: Susan Rushing Adams on Oct 20, 2012Comments: It's dangerous to navigate through a parking lot at SUVs' bumper height, as I've often had to do when wheelchair van parking is taken. I have to take two spaces and hope that no one squeezes in next to my van. I've almost been hit by cars who cannot see me as they enter a parking lot or back up, as careful as I am. Plus people get angry about us taking two spaces. One of the best options is to make the van spaces further away from the other disabled parking (though still on an accessible route). Alternatively, one can make all spaces van accessible with a shared access aisle--people who walk and who are disabled very often need room to get out safely with service dogs, crutches, walkers, etc. They also need to preserve proper ergonomics to prevent a fall or fracture and often cannot park next to others' car doors so that they can rotate sideways and stand up straight without squeezing between cars.Flag
