In a small town in West Virginia, an elementary school called Marsh Fork exists. It is downriver from a massive coal mining operation, and toxins in the air and water are making the students extremely sick. The West Virginia government has refused to build a new elementary school in a safer location. The community, afraid for its children's lives, began the organization Pennies of Promise to raise the funds themselves.

The stories you are sharing about the health of our children at Marsh Fork are heartbreaking but they prove that we are not alone in this fight. I am currently working to get our basic demands in front of the officials who keep ignoring us. We must keep this momentum because the safety of these students is worth more than any mining operation.

Seeing this kind of momentum feels like a weight lifting off the chests of parents who have been fighting these coal companies for far too long. I am overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers who recognize that no child should have to breathe toxic air just to attend class. We are forcing them to pay attention to Marsh Fork at last.

This makes me sick. How can the state just sit back and watch this happen to little kids? Unbelievable.

My own kids went to school near a site like this and the health issues are real. Nobody should have to pay out of pocket to keep their kids safe from toxic waste. Get these kids out of there now.
