Pennhurst Controversy

We the undersigned feel strongly that the project known as Pennhurst Asylum in Montgomery County, PA is ill-conceived and inappropriate for these reasons:

        1) it unecessarily exploits those who are developmentally disabled

        2) it is offensive to their families and friends

        3) it sets a poor example for the youth of our community

Now, therefore we pledge the following:

       1) we will not seek employment at this project

       2) we will not patronize the project

       3) we will encourage our family, friends and acquaintances do likewise

4 years ago Comments: I can barely describe in words how deeply I am offended by former asylums being turned into nothing more than exploitive freak-shows! The purchasers of these forgotten buildings hide under the guise of saving historical monuments. They forget what made these buildings so INFAMOUS. If people had not suffered mercilessness there would be no attraction, and no money. I understand that in order to make a buck you feel that you have to appeal to the masses of misinformed and uneducated potential patrons. The fact remains that you are you are making a financial gain from glorifying the misery of others and perpetuate stereotypes that people with psychiatric disorders are unpredictable homicidal maniacs who do not deserve basic human regard. 1 in 4 people in America have a mental illness. Think about it. Pennhurst and the flock of other gold-diggers are making money and a mockery of you, your friends, and your family members. I oppose Pennhurst and push for reform! These buildings are beautiful structures that had "good intentions" that are still being used for evil. We have the power to transform these buildings into something much more positive and beneficial than a spook-show fashioned from the ignorance of others and the blood of those who have been mistreated.
