The proposed site for development of the new Pemberton skate park is below the power lines. Power lines create Electromagnetic Fields and this exposure has been linked to cancers in children. Testing at the site has shown levels that are not considered safe for regular exposure. There is a possibility to get Pemberton council to consider a proposal to move the site of the park to Pioneer Park (across from the Pemberton Hotel). This site has trees, shade, washrooms, a gazebo, the river, a central location, and poses no danger to people who will be spending large amounts of time at the park. The Pemberton Skate Society has worked hard over the years to secure funding and a location for the park. This petition is not meant to under mine their efforts but to work together as a community to ensure that we are providing our community, our children, and future generations with a safe place to skate. The government grant which will pay for 2/3 of the park has to be used by March 2011 or it will expire. Building the park can't be done in the winter, so this means we do not have much time to secure a location and keep this grant. If we do not gather enough support to move the location soon, the proposed site under the power lines will likely go ahead. The field on the other side of the community centre is being looked at to see if it could be a possible site (but there is geo thermal there so it is not likely) and the possibility of extending the grant is also being looked at, but this is also not likely. Pemberton Council is willing to consider a proposal to put the park at Pioneer Park if there is enough support for it. Please voice your opinion about this, write a letter to mayor and council or the paper, sign the petition, join the facebook group, and help make a difference.
