We, the undersigned students and faculty members of California public schools, are opposed to proposed legislation to remove show choir, marching band and dance from the list of acceptable physical education courses, as per Education Code, sections 51222 and 51241. Since these organizations all get the amount of physical activity required by the state per week, there is no logical reason why these classes should not be granted physical education credit. I have no special interest in the outcome, but I live right next to a high school and the students in the activities other than the actual PE courses seem to get much more physical activity than many in the PE classes. Swimming is about the only activity they should need to take in PE. And many students are already proficient in swimming so they and all students could be given a chance to test out of the swimming requirements if they want.
