DON’T CHOP US OUT OF THE PANHANDLE ONE block in the Panhandle has been singled out by the Redistricting Task Force to be moved to District One from our historic District 5. The block bounded by Hayes St., Shrader St., Grove St., and Cole St. will be disconnected from our neighbors with whom we have geographic, historic, social and economic bonds. Ten years ago the Redistricting Task Force removed three NW blocks from our community of interest (see 3101 below) — now they want to chop us up again. It’s someone else’s turn to sacrifice. We are part of the Panhandle, not part of the Richmond. • We share the same shopping areas: Haight Street and Divisadero Street. • We work with the neighborhood organizations that are part of our neighborhood: North of Panhandle Neighborhood Assn., Panhandle Residents Organization/Stanyan Fulton, Haight Ashbury Neighborhood Council and Haight Ashbury Improvement Assn. • We attend community meetings at the Haight Branch Library, just 2 blocks south. • Our homes are similar in architecture to the homes in the Western Edition, not the Richmond. • Our heritage is only 10% Asian, and do not wish to further dilute the Asian votes in District 1. • We have been a part of the Panhandle since neighborhoods first organized in the area to fight the Freeway that threatened the entire Panhandle and Golden Gate Park. Please do not separate us politically from our neighborhood.
