In 2007 the house of lords ruled in favour of the insurance companies not to award compensation to people who have contracted pleural plaques which is a disease of the lungs brought about by exposure to asbestos fibres, it was as the house of lords put it, " not detrimental to a persons well being " this ruling saved the insurance companies over £1.4 billion by not having to pay out compensation payments to sufferers.
