Albuquerque City Council failed to override Mayor Richard Berry's veto of two marijuana-related measures at Wednesday's council meeting.

Both measures received 5-4 votes in the motion to override Berry's veto; they needed six to overturn the veto.

The council originally passed the two amendments to the city's criminal code last month by a 5-4 vote: one that would essentially decriminalize marijuana possession under an ounce in city limits – making it a $25 ticket - and one that would make possession the Albuquerque Police Department's lowest priority.

But Mayor Berry vetoed the measures just days later.

City Council President Rey Garduño moved up discussion for the possible veto to the beginning of the meeting after it had been slated for the end, and also allowed public comment on the matter.

One of the "no" votes would have change their mind; a veto can only be overridden with six votes.
