Governor Markell announced today that he vetoed House Bill 50, the Opt-Out bill, which would allow for any student to be opted-out of any state or district assessment. He tried to soften that blow, and prevent an override vote, with some nonsense about signing a Senate Joint Resolution that seeks to get recommendations from various groups and school districts and boards.
I have a better idea. Let's override that veto. HB50 passed the House twice by two-thirds margins, 36-3 and 31-5. And it passed the Senate twice by two-thirds margins, 14-7 and 15-6. Both chambers can vote again.

Forcing the schools to use an assessment that is not supported by teachers and parents is shortsighted. Vetoing HB50 gives the impression that the Governer is more interested in special interests than in governing for the people of the state of Delaware.
As a parent of students who attend Delaware public schools, it is MY right to determine MY kids' educational needs, learning and assessment, NOT the Governor. I stand AGAINST his veto and will not accept it.
Public sentiment toward standardized testing was accurately captured by our representatives who overwhelmingly voted in support of this legislative action. Why the veto on what the public wants?
Listen to those directly experiencing the negative effects the current methods of standardized testing are having on students, teachers, parents, and the quality of education in general. The people have spoken.
Please come back and override the veto! This test is not helpful to the children or the teachers! We won't see results from this year's test until fall...how does that help anyone?
The US Courts have ruled that parents/guardians are responsible for their children not Gov. Markell or the DOE.
I deserve the right to decide what is best for my children not the government.
