I am a longstanding fan of Stargate the Movie, Stargate SG-1, and now Stargate Atlantis. I watch the show religiously, have purchased and own the DVD box sets released to date, and take part in conventions related to Stargate when possible. I purchase novelizations based on the television shows. I am also a part of the on-line fan community, reading and taking part in fan fiction related to the show.
I was devastated to learn via the internet that the character of Carson Beckett was killed in the third season episode “Sunday.” The last episode to air to date in the United States has been “The Return Part 1.” To know ahead of time that one of the most beloved characters of the show was to die was heartbreaking and shocking. I ask that you reconsider this “death” as the very last time we will see Dr. Beckett on the show, and find a way to bring him back either frequently or as part of the regular cast.
From watching the DVD extras on Stargate Atlantis Season 1, it was apparent that the character of Dr. Beckett, played by Paul McGillion, was the “heart” of the show; a character that no one expected to play such a crucial role in the series but did. The Stargate franchise, especially Stargate Atlantis, is about an ensemble cast, about their relationships with each other as well as their fantastic adventures. To loose such a crucial character so early in the hopefully long run of the series can only negatively effect future seasons. Fans, like myself, have loved the character of Dr. Beckett and the ensemble nature of the show. Like Babylon 5 or Battlestar Galatica, fans saw Startgate Atlantis building a cadre of fascinating main and supporting characters beyond merely the four central gate team characters. With more regular characters there is greater possibilities for storylines, complex character development and expanding the already detailed Stargate universe. Dr. Beckett’s sudden and unexpected death is a blow to the whole show.
I am pleased that Jewel Staite will be joining the cast of Stargate Atlantis and am sure that she will be a great addition to the cast. I intend no disrespect to Jewel Straite in writing this letter and hope that she too has a long run on the show. However, I am deeply saddened and upset that such a great actress is only joining in the wake of the death of another phenomenal character. Adding characters to support already established characters such as the character of Dr. Beckett could only enrich the show. Simply killing off one character to replace him with another does not necessarily benefit anyone. Please reconsider your plans to keep Carson Beckett, played by Paul McGillion, off the show for good. His skill as an actor and the wonderful character form the heart of the show, playing off of the other stellar actors and characters.
This is not the first time I have written regarding the loss of a character in a television show and I know the power of the fan opinion. Star Trek would never have become the wide sweeping franchise without fan support. The movie “Serenity” would never have been shown on the wide screen. The characters of Iolaus in “Hercules the Legendary Journeys” and Dr. Daniel Jackson in “Stargate SG-1" would have remained dead without fan support, depriving each of their shows from great stories and continued episodes. “Stargate SG-1" itself would not have become the longest running science fiction show ever without fans. I ask that you take into account my opinion and other fan’s opinions and at least consider what we ask.
Shows like Stargate Atlantis are more than just entertainment to the fans, but a fictive universe that you create for all of us to enjoy. Losing Paul McGillion’s character Carson Beckett permanently is a mistake and I ask that you bring him back soon.

They had better find another way to put him back on (they brought Daniel Jackson SG1 back I don’t know how many times now, so they had better come up with a good story line to bring back Beckett) or I won’t be watching this show anymore.
I pay $17.99 + taxes per month in order to watch Stargate Atlantis, and I can tell you this much, I won’t be watching the show anymore.
The only reason I paid the price for the movie network was to watch Stargate Atlantis and if Beckett is gone and not coming back, then I’m not wasting my hard earned money anymore.
After the episode airs (we haven’t seen it yet), I’m cancelling the movie network.
Until I read that Beckett is coming back on, I will not renew or order the movie network.
Hit them where it hurts, in the POCKET BOOK and in the RATINGS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If everyone boycotts watching Stargate Atlantis, and the ratings drop, we will see changes, until then, they will continue to ruin an excellent show. Just look at what they did to SG1. Because of all the crap they kept pulling they lost alot of viewers and now SG1 is no more.
As for the excuses keep it real, how about they get rid of the idiot writer & whoever else decided to get rid of Beckett in order to keep it real. (Stargate Atlantis, takes me away from my real life, even if it is only for 45 minutes a week) I don't need anymore real life shows, OK!
We loved the show just the way it is. (Actually, I would have prefered seeing Beckett alot more then they were showing him as he was the "HEART" of the show. I would prefer to see him become part of Shepard's team to have more airtime.

Carson's death is an insult to all the fans of this character, Paul McGillion and the show itself. They love the show, cause it's fiction. No one should die in it! We don't want a copy of reality! We want a show we can enjoy, with the actors and characters we want to see on it. And in that case it would be Paul McGillion and Carson Beckett!!

And to basically repeat the death of Dr. Frasier with a new name is embarassing. The lack of Originality is why Sg-1 is being cancelled and Atlantis is vastly unwatched.
The Stargate writers have ruined their shows many times by removing characters people loved, such as:
Dr. Frasier, Daniel Jackson, Jack O'neil.
They made those decisions and drowned Sg-1, now they're destroying Atlantis the same way, but they're starting at an earlier season. |
