Dear Mayor Piercy and Eugene City Councilors:
I am writing to let you know of my support for the Toxics Right-to-Know program. I urge you to approve adding gas station, petroleum distributors and other businesses that use over 2,640 pounds of hazardous chemicals to the current toxics reporting program.
I believe that the Right-to-Know program provides numerous public benefits. The foremost in my mind is the collection of important information on the quality of our local air and water. Residents deserve to know what each business is emitting into our public spaces. In particular, our community should know the cumulative effects of individual emitters of toxic chemicals. In the near future, I hope we will use this information to set protective health and environmental benchmarks.
I am proud that Eugene is offering a prototype of how a community can gather factual environmental data and apply the information towards a higher quality of living.
Please vote yes on expanding the Toxics Reporting requirements.
Sincerely, |
