The petition

We the undersigned reject the basic premise of the proposed licensing of residential rental units in the City of Oshawa.
The City of Oshawa has chosen to only apply this law to the streets surrounding the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and nowhere else in the city. The law limits the number of bedrooms in a rental house to 4 and does not allow students to use a basement as a bedroom even if the basement is up to code. The law will effectively; raise rents for students, forbid students from occupying basement bedrooms, and drastically increase costs to landlords who will pass on these costs to students. The fact that a family can own a house and be treated one way while a student renter is treated another is a situation that is not tolerable and discriminatory under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The very fact that this law is only being applied on streets in Oshawa where students reside is prejudicial and is aimed at zoning students out of the community in which they reside.

After being granted the luxury of a university that will employ thousands of residents, this is the City's response to a student community that spends tens of millions in the city. This law if unopposed will set a precedent throughout Ontario and will be coming soon to a University town near you.
