The City Council has officially withdrawn the contested housing element and committed to the public process we requested. This outcome demonstrates the value of persistent engagement in local government. We will monitor the upcoming discussions closely to ensure our community remains involved in every step of the planning process.

Orinda Citizens MUST HAVE A VOICE in the City's housing plan

Dear City Council of Orinda, California

Orinda citizens have had no input into the city's housing plan (Housing Element) negotiated between City staff and the state Department of Housing and Community Development, and neither has the City Council. What's worse, the agreement contains concessions and commitments that are not required by state law.

We, the undersigned residents of Orinda, request the City Council do the following:

1) Withdraw the Housing Element sent to the California Department of Housing and Community Development by Orinda staff on June 4, 2013.

2) Only rezone the properties for high-density housing needed to meet state housing mandates--do not redefine all residential multifamily zoning to be high-density.

3) Do not commit to a General Plan update or to rezone downtown for high-density housing, and remove all references to the Downtown Plan.

4) Initiate a public discussion regarding which parcel(s) should be rezoned for high-density housing to meet state mandates. Staff and Council members must disclose any and all communication with developers regarding potential projects on properties considered for rezoning.

Stop ignoring the people who actually live here. We deserve to know what is happening to our neighborhoods before it is too late.

Transparency is all we are asking for. City hall needs to come clean about these secret agreements.

This is ridiculous. Why are they making deals behind our backs? Listen to the residents for once.

Total incompetence. They are trying to ruin the character of our town without asking anyone first.

So frustrating. We pay for this city to work for us not for developers to take over everything.
