Name: Jeff Obrien on Jun 15, 2008Comments: I purchased a house in Hamtramck because of the interesting diversity, cool bars/restaurants, and interesting shops. The grocery options in the city are wonderful at present, and an Aldi food store is not only unnecessary, but unwanted. There's low income targeted, trash retail in the city as it is. An Aldi is needed about as much as another nail & beauty supply shop, or another fly by night tax shop. What's next Happy's Pizza and LA Insurance Keep this garbage out of my city, please. The tax structures, abatements and PILOTS really seem to be making money for everyone involved beside the city. How does the city benefit from this Congested streetsFlag

Name: Tiffany Gerulis on Nov 3, 2008Comments: As a former resident, a soon to be again resident, and a lifelong customer of Hamtramck businesses, I am appalled by this Aldi/Condo idea- Aldi is NOT the kind of retailer that belongs on the main street of a historical city, and is the same Wal-Mart mentality that has been the root cause of the lose of so many small businesses (which are our economic life blood). The city already has fantastic food shopping, with more close by, and a number of stores that one can get things like dishsoap and toilet paper at a discount. What the area really needs is a hotel (and not the usual chain garbage). What is wrong with renovating the interior to accomodate maybe 10 rooms on the upper level, a reception/lounge/historical educational area on the ground floor, and a cafe/meeting room area in the basement Restore the outside to its original beauty, and give people who are visiting family, attending the Labor day festival, or crawling our pubs and music venues someplace memorable to lay their heads. We need to keep businesses locally owned, and start renewing our sense of community and self sufficiency.Flag
