The election is over. We have collectively reaffirmed our support for the President. We wish to remind you that President Obama won with only a small edge in the popular vote. By no means was this a mandate. So what, really, does this mean? We have elected you all, whether you be liberal or conservative, moderate or radical, so that you can represent who we are as a nation. Do we want you to use leverage to push the philosophy of law and policy in one direction or another? Of course we do. But, we elected you because we believe you have the ability to represent us all equally and find proportionate compromise. We expect that you have the ability to navigate the sea of proposals, not seeking black and white, but elegant and creative shades of grey. We are of all races. We are liberal, conservative and everywhere in the middle. We are devoutly religious, atheists and everywhere in the middle. We are both straight and gay. We expect you to represent us all. We expect you to find reasonable compromise. We expect you to find solutions that do not require abandonment of principles, but are inclusive of the principles of those who may oppose you. Do not look to us for solutions. Do not look to those who threaten to influence the next election with power and influence. We elected you to work for us, for all of us. We expect you to find these solutions and represent all of us collectively. We cannot promise to be happy with all that you do. We can promise to appreciate your effort. We expect you to live by the following motto, "You can please all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time." We expect you to restore the pride that we once had in our Legislature, which once carried the Standard for figuring things out. Please work to live up to our expectations. If you cannot, please step down and support someone who can. Thank you.
