Against the AUC Gate Closure...
We, the students, faculty, and staff of the American University in Cairo are in opposition to the closure of the campus gates. While we have valid concerns regarding the tuition, closing the gates is NOT THE SOLUTION. It is an infringement on people's personal rights and causes undue burden on people who need to access campus offices or facilities (including medical center) for personal, academic, or professional reasons. It is unfair to imprison the dorm residents, and causes a emergency hazard. It is interfering with students ability to obtain the education they paid for and placing more stress on the faculty and students to make up the material missed. This escalation of events is dangerous. We need a new student movement that is able to fight for our rights and successfully negotiate with the administration without hurting the rights of others... until we find those people, OPEN THE GATES!
