Ontario College of Pharmacists are now requiring Pharmacy technicians to be licensed in order to retain their title "pharmacy technician". Without being licensed, formally trained "technicians" will now be called "assistants". For those of "us" who were formally trained (college) and those of us who invested thousands of dollars to receive our training in a school setting, the whole system is nothing but a money grab by the Ontario government. I have advocated having the job regulated to protect those of us who have written exams, passed with honors and spent several years in the workplace as a "pharmacy technician". The regulation set up by OCP requires "everyone" whether formally trained or not to write the PEBC evaluation exam, and in Ontario you must take the "bridging program" courses, after that you can write the "Qualify" exam, the jurist prudence and finally, attain you license. I would like the Ontario government and OCP to re-evlaute the existing criteria. I believe that those of us who were formally trained in a College course ( and graduated)to be exempt from the evaluating exam. I have written the "evaluating exam" and passed it however, do not feel that I should have written it. To be fair, it should be an exam to "graduate" those "technicians" who have been trained on the job. Those who pass can go on to write the" Qualifying" exam. For those who do not pass it should be suggested they attend a recognized school to gain the skills needed to be working in a pharmacy environment. Just like the rest of us. I also feel that if the criteria does not change that the Government of Ontario should reimburse the tuition paid for those who have graduated from a college course for pharmacy technicians . Since they are basically saying that it was pointless we attended such programs. Please sign my petition if you feel that you are in agreement with my plight.
