Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression for Women inside the Media.

Since Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980 we have only had one female journalist in the country who has risen to the position of Editor in the Zimbabwe. Besides this gross under-representation of female journalists in media management, media content continues to undermine the status of women in terms of less and stereotypic coverage. It is time the relevant authorities take notice of the contributions of female journalists. As the Women Empowerment Foundation Scribes Africa (WEFSA), we say there are a lot of capable and dedicated female journalists who can make great editors and managers if given a chance. We say there is no true press freedom when the voices of women continue to be suppressed. As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of the World Press Freedom Day this year, let us take action and speak with one bold voice against gender discrimination in the newsroom by signing this petition which will be delivered to the relevant authorities.
