Taylor on Jan 29, 2010Comments: As president of the North Carolina Biosciences Organization, I am keenly aware of the importants of the One North Carolina Small Business Fund to early-stage life science companies seeking to commericalize new health care products. I urge the North Carolina General Assembly to approve full funding for this important Program.Flag

Name: Jennifer Woodford on Feb 8, 2010Comments: I am employed by a small, start-up biotech company that spun out from one of the state's universities. Part of my salary and our post-doc's come from monies provided by this grant. More importantly, without these funds the scientists could have never launched this business. The funds gave them the financial start to do the preliminary research that has won them several hundred thousand dollars in grants and has positioned them to receive more, potentially millions of dollars more, in grant funds. As their grant awards grow, they will be hiring more people. The SBIR funds are directly responsible for launching this company and its technology that will introduce new plant-based technologies into the vaccine, toleragen and diagnostics markets. If North Carolina is to continue being a leader increasing the funding of this progam is absolutely essential!Flag

Name: Heidi Collins on Feb 18, 2010Comments: This fund has been a major reason my employer (an R&D small business) was able to hire me. And now the fund has been cut. Even though we achieved literally record success last year, we did not receive matching funds. This has impacted our company's ability to expand and grow. I have every confidence that, if One NC Small Business Program is adequately funded, I will be able to stay gainfully employed as well as continuing to fully enjoy my work. If One NC Small Business Program fails to be adequately funded, I fear that I will be among the ranks of the unemployed.Flag

Name: Michael P. Vitek, Ph.D. on Mar 1, 2010Comments: The One North Carolina Funds matching program for SBIR/STTR grants has been a great benefit to Cognosci. It has allowed us to weather the current economic storm and continue to build a strong base. We hope that when times improve, that the core people supported with these funds will form the foundation of a larger and more prosperous company. Thanks for everything, we sincerely hope the program will be contintued and expanded, much like NIH was recently. Mike Vitek CEO, Cognosci, Inc.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Mar 10, 2010Comments: This change in policy affects my employer which in turn has a direct impact on me. My work hours have been reduced and the CEO of my company has placed me in a status of "come to work when needed - I will let you know". So I don't even know what my next paycheck will contain - if anything! My employer achieved record success last year with 7 Phase 1 wins, and yet, did not receive matching funds. This has impacted our ability to expand and grow and will likely send me to the unemployment office - which creates yet another burden on the state and federal budgets.Flag
