Some Background Information

Africom was created in 2007 by then president Bush, vice-president dick Cheney, and secretary of state Donald Rumsfield.  Upon learning that Ghana stroke oil previously in 2007 along with dick Cheney's company, Halliburton Africom was created and accepted by congress with a budget in 2008 with little media attention.

According to ResistAfricom's website, a NGO in Washington, DC, one of Africom's primary functions will be to train and equip African militarises to "legitimize" and "professionalize" soldiers. The history of U.S. train and equip programs has resulted in devastation and violence as a result of the infusion of weapons and training into unstable areas of Africa. During the Cold War, the U.S. provided weapons and training to governments which were willing to help fight the ideological war against communism, regardless of their human rights or good governance standards. The U.S. continues such programs today under the mantra of counter terrorism and is currently providing military aid to countries such as Chad and Equatorial Guinea.

Africom is currently located in Stuttgart, Germany, alongside European Command. Originally, Africom sought a headquarters on the continent, but after a strong outcry from African governments, the Pentagon decided to leave the Command in Stuttgart. Africom has said that it will remain there until they find it necessary to relocate on the continent.

There is a great outcry against Africom occupying Africa mainly because it would undermine the sovereignty gained by countries from colonialism, it would usurp the efforts of the African Union to establish a United States of Africa by 2012, and Africom would legally manipulate Africa's natural resources for united states interests.

A petition has been generated to collect one million signatures to send to President Obama and Congress to eliminate Africom and to stop funding with American taxpayers dollars so needed in the current economic crisis.  All it takes is your signature.  Please support this effort. Thanks so much.
