Please join me in signing this petition to have the third grade KP Players continue to meet only once per week.  Having the KP Players meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays would infringe on other after school activities, homework, and downtime. If the KP Opera, which involved many more kids, could operate with only one day a week so can the KP Players.  One day a week will keep this a fun experience; twice a week will turn it into a chore.

In September, many parents were concerned about increasing the frequency and we were told that the issue would be re-visited at a meeting on December 18.  The meeting did not occur as planned, but the KP Player sessions have been increased for the new year from once a week for one hour to twice a week for a total of 3 hours a week without any parent input.  Sessions are expected to increase to three times a week in April and May.

Remember that prior to this year the Opera was integrated into the school day and called for no after school hours.  Until the two weeks before performance, the Opera, which was more elaborate and had many more kids, never met more than 1 1/2 hours a week.  Since the Opera preparation was held during school hours, there was no impact on homework or after school activities.

Now roughly a third of the third grade class is scheduled to have theater class after school twice a week. For many of us, once a week was hard enough; twice per week is nearly impossible.  We have to make the choice between supporting the KP Players and other worthwhile pursuits.  Many children will have to drop activities that are already  scheduled so they can continue with the players.  The children would be better served by being able to participate in a variety of activities such as  sports, music lessons, or cultural/religious classes on the proposed second day.  For those of you with children without a conflicting activity on Thursdays, how many chose to keep the day free to reduce stress from busy, heavily scheduled lives?  Does a theater class for third graders really merit 3 hours a week for the next few months and 4 1/2 hours thereafter.

If you agree that the theater class should remain just once a week, please form a united front and sign the attached petition.  If you know of someone who did not get this petition in error, please forward it.   We can present our views at the January 10 meeting.  Thank you.

Sincerely,

Beth Meyer
