Local and Internationally renowned artist Stan Mullins created the sculpture. Inspired by Herschel, Mullins felt the need to honor a Hero. Mullins, longtime Athens resident and alum of UGA created "The Character of a Champion" back in 2005, it was his hope then that UGA would go on to commission other inspirations of his Alma Mater, but it seems they have dropped the ball.- With his 2015 commission for Marshall University, "Ashes to Glory", Mullins recently stated, "The road to Glory leads thru Marshall. "Lets help him rally the Bulldawg Nation and roll out "Oh You Herschel Walker!"
- At this point UGA Athletic Director Greg McGarity has applauded the individual effort but has expressed no interest in the sculpture itself.
It is interesting to note that under his tenure at the University of Florida, a sculpture of Tim Tebow was commissioned and erected on their campus.
