New Oceanside Middle School bell schedule: Start 7:05 AM, End 1:45 PM
We are writing to tell you how upset we are that middle schools are supposed to start so early in the 2007/2008 school year. For school to start at 7:05 AM, many students will need to awaken well before 6AM. Numerous studies have shown that young adolescents need more sleep and that their internal clocks are shifting their alertness to later in the day. I agree 100% with Mrs. Cremonesi, the school should create more after school programs for our kids and definitely start class a little later.

My daughter has a hard enough time paying attention in school, waking her up before six will not make learning any easier for her. She has activites after school and sometimes we do not get home until seven, she will still need to do the HUGE amount of homework that is assigned. It makes no sense to me, who is it benefiting Not the children!

I don't agree with this petition. I've been getting up at 5:45am in order to have time to cook a good breakfast and drop my son off at Lincoln by 7:10, giving him 10 minutes to get to class by the 7:20 start time. He goes to bed at 8:00, asleep by 8:30 and wakes up at 6:00am. That's 9 1/2 hours of sleep. It's all a matter of self disapline and parental control. Also, I feel that getting out of school earlier is great. It gives the student enough time to actually do a good job on their homework instead of rushing to get down before dinner or staying up late to finish. They can go to the school library or the city library or take turns meeting at friend's homes where there is a parent. Again, it's all about good parental control and disapline.
I also feel that busing is important. It isn't getting out early that creates "gang and unsupervised kids" problems. The problem is that the kids are hanging around the school and streets because they aren't being bused back to their homes.
I do, however, agree that there should be more after school programs.
