Comments: Prejudice has too longed been disguised as faith. Oppression of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people is immoral. It is time for social justice and spiritual evolution.

Comments: It is so important for OBU to protect all of its students, and as those in charge are fully aware, written policies are the first line of defense for their safety.

Comments: Please review these archaic policies and make corrections. Even God would rather have gay and lesbian students hearing your message at your school than ignoring it someplace else.

Comments: As a teacher at OBU from 1970-1974, I know of one instance in which a young woman was expelled for having been in a lesbian relationship with another young woman...I don't know any particulars as to why one was expelled and one allowed to stay on, but I do know I worried about the young woman who was dismissed from the college. I know of two young women who were open enough about their own relationship to have caused them to be dismissed, but they were strong students and either because they were warned there would be repercussions if they enrolled as sophmores, they chose to transfer to another school. They were not blatant...they were just testing the waters on all kinds of levels...not just as lesbians who never spoke of being lesbians, incidentally, until a philosophy professor who saw the students we had lost and also saw the closeted students who were lost themselves in confusion and pain and the assumption they could not pursue their religious calling and ever reveal their sexual orientation invited the two young women back for a panel discussion of homosexuality and its ramifications for OBU students. Under the administration at that time and with the faculty we had at that time, such open discussion of questions the college needed to address in a way that considered scientific evidence of homosexual orientations with which a student is born and which his/her natural orientation might cause, what Christian gay students go through within their Christian homes, how fear of ruining a stellar reputation as a young Christian leader can cause young people to leave the church altogether, and the fact that 1/3 of all teenage suicides are related to depression and/or "outing" of gay young people. The latter is a proven fact, based on a study authorized by national legislators and senators, indeed commissioned and/or funded partly by our government---but the results were suppressed and the report buried when the facts were brought before committees for resolutions that might prevent this tragic loss of life. A university so committed to the sacredness of life should not ignore such a document and subsequent research of this type, for I daresay the students most likely to commit suicide over being gay are those who are Christians who are so ashamed of their sexual orientation that they cannot face themselves, let alone their families and friends, let alone their churches and colleges or seminaries.

Comments: As amended the policy would foster responsible behavior and would protect all students from discrimination and harassment. I approve of these changes.
