This an open letter to the New Zealand Prime Minister: Dear Ms Clark Please allow us to voice our opinions as Fiji citizens. Though the overthrown government was unpopular with the general populous, the overwhelming majority of Fijian people would have preferred a democratic solution. However, the extended sanctions under-taken by New Zealand seem to be specifically targeted at Fiji citizens. I am referring to these particular points: - Fiji\'s participation in the seasonal work scheme has been frozen and no application from Fijians for entry to New Zealand for the work scheme will be accepted. - Fiji citizens will not be eligible to take part on future immigration ballots under the access quota for the Pacific. - A number of development assistance to the Fiji government has also been ceased including new government managed scholarships, assistance to the Elections Office and [support for people in the squatter settlements.] I am sure that you will agree that isolating and penalising the citizens of Fiji will have little to no impact on your end goal of making a political statement. It will only serve to further the divide between Fijian and New Zealand citizens. If you hold the Fijian citizens accountable for the political events, then your viewpoint is seriously misconstrued. Fijians are a peace loving people and they were not consulted prior to these actions taking place. This is the time for the New Zeland government to extend a helping hand to the Fiji citizens, not to worsen their situation further. In summary, I would ask you to seriously reconsider sanctions that have a humanitarian impact. Fiji citizens will thank you for it. Nick Brown, New Zealand3 years ago Comments: I don't think it is neccesary to have these sanctions from what I have read Bainimarama has put fiji on the right track and they are heading towards democracy in 2014 I don't think New Zealand should argue with them about that let them prove that they are heading towards a return to democracy we should be extending a helping hand as a big brother and as a kiwi I believe we should show some support to the people of fiji rather than hurt the average citizen it is simply unfair. There needs to be more dialogue between New Zealand and Fiji so New Zealand gets a better understanding of the situatuon
Nabakewa, Fiji7 years ago Comments: Please do not hurt the local citizens of this country as there were not part of the military take over. By allowing further sanctions NZ is only making matters worse as all Pacific Islanders have this kinship relationship between family memebrs and it will trickle down the ladder.
