Comments: I would love my children to be able to have the benefit of using the roads as cyclists, but I cannot yet see that it will ever be safe enough for them to do so.

Comments: Improved education of local authorities will also prevent shared (pedestrian/cyclist) routes from being closed to cyclists due to a few reported 'near misses'. These closures such as the one between Wellington's Cable car and the Met office force cyclists back onto the roads which increases risk. We don't ban cars from roads because of near misses with cyclists - even deaths, so why ban cyclists from paths on the same basis

Comments: Government needs to demonstrate visible commitment to encouraging cycling. The above points are all fundamental ways to start the process. Once implemented, the process will be self sustaining - eg: safer roads mean more cyclists which means more driver awareness which encourages more cyclists. Some of the costs of immediate implementation are minimal and the benefits for cyclists will be correspondingly immediate. I urge the government to look to the future but act now.

Comments: I'd also urge the minister to abolish the compulsory helmet wearing law. It would do much to encourage cycling in New Zealand

Comments: National and local governments should be doing more to promote cycling and make it safe and easy for everyone. Cyclists should be able to get around safely without being endangered or abused by motor vehicles.

Comments: Also: Publicise impact of deaths on deceased family and friends, also impact on motorists that caused the deaths. Media has been very quiet on that since June 19. I would like to know what (if any) charges have been laid and what the crown will push for - ie admission of guilt on a lesser charge to save expense of trial etc.

Comments: I know, it sounds out of place for a safety campaign, but please consider getting rid of this compulsory helmet-wearing-law. So much more people would use and enjoy using a cycle. Helmets don't help in serious accidents. For children, yes, and wearing a helmet should be encouraged, but please, don't make it compulsory!
