Comments: I find Johnson's remarks to be the absolute antithesis of critique. He is making judgments based on ethnicity and gender, not on the subject matter. With so many diverse groups represented in the arts, it really goes to show that art criticism needs to be as diverse. What had been printed more than validates how artists tend to view critics when it comes to not understanding subject matter, and opining on how they feel about how they exist in what they feel is in an impenetrable bubble. When an art critic trashes a successful show due to a silly assumption on his or her part that shows what the critic really wants to saw about how they view life, and damn the artists who spent the years of study, putting work into galleries, and having the prestige of being part of an exhibit. Johnson needs to be censured or replaced. He really is not prepared for a lot of the shifts that are happening in the art world, and all the work that is being done now.

Comments: I recently read Mr. Johnson's review of Lin Tianmiao's show at the Asia Society, and was disturbed at his casual dismissal of her work as derivative, not original (terms often ascribed to female artists' work in the past). I googled his name and found this petition. Besides the offensiveness of these articles, I am struck by his conversational, vernacular use of language - not the usual high standard of the New York Times' art criticism. I also felt that he is lacking in his knowledge of art history.

Comments: Stereotyping is not criticism, it is feeble thinking. Universally, solidarity for positivism about art regardless of gender and nationality is required.
