Comments: One would think the New York Times could afford an art critic who wasn't determined to make a consistent fool of himself.

Comments: Mr. Johnson has, at some points, completely distorted and manufactured the history of contemporary art in order to create a narrative the so obviously privileges white males over any other group of people (and for trite, flimsy reasons!), simply reinforcing many of the troubling hegemonic structures that govern our world--something that I never quite expected of the NYT.

Comments: It is not the job of female and minority artists to cater to a white male viewpoint. If you immediately eschew a work for not having to do with your own experience and instead value it by how closely it mimics your chosen aesthetic, you are not doing your job. You do not need to be female or black to appreciate a female or black viewpoint. It is lazy to reside within your familiar cocoon, only putting effort into art that is immediately accessible. What you’ve written is the critical equivalent of a child telling his parent that his reading homework is “too hard” when he really just wants to go read his comics instead. Try harder to be better.

Comments: Ignorance is the only excuse for making uninformed pronouncements like Mr. Johnson's, and in an art critic for the NY Times ignorance at this level is unforgivable.
