Along with firearms, hanging is statistically one of the most common methods of suicide. This law would require mental health professionals (physicians, psychologists, social workers, registered nurses) to report anybody who they believe in their professional opinion to be likely to engage in conduct that would result in serious harm to self or others. Once reported, the patient will be placed on the official NYC ROPE registry which would ban the sale of any items that are potentially life threatening via hanging to these individuals. Each individual on the registry will also be investigated to ensure that they are not in possession of these items, and if discovered, these items will be confiscated. These items may include the following: plastic bags, shoe laces, electric cords, belts, and bed sheets.
