Comments: Do it now, I am FreeBSD user, but hardware 3d is a must for every os. And I don't think it's such a heavy task to solve. Last not least NetBSD user are customers too!

Comments: I tend to get Radeon based cards currently due to the (marginally) better support compared to NVIDIA. A NetBSD NVIDIA driver would certainly change this preference.

Comments: It shouldn't be that hard to provide NetBSD port of the driver, when there is FreeBSD one present already.

Comments: IMHO, its best to have the documentation on how their cards work. It ensures that cards people purchased will be supported by future releases of NetBSD.

Comments: I think it makes sense for both sides. I know many people that buy Nvidia products just for the use with FreeBSD or Linux. I'm sure NetBSD would be no different. On the other the user would benefit largely from a driver and things just go smoother. It should be possible to use the hardware in a way that it was meant to be used on the system of _choice_.
