On November 5th 2012, the NPCO staff came to our community class and gave a presentation about our Integrated Practicum coming up in the summer of 2013! Many of us were disappointed with the 15 minute presentation.

Firstly, long-term care placements were being glorified in order to increase the acceptance of potentially receiving this placement. We were also informed that this is now a subcategory of medicine. Long-term care is not a medicine placement. We are not saying there is anything wrong with long-term care; there should be opportunity for anyone who CHOOSES this area specifically. I believe it is unfair for students choosing medicine and preferring a hospital setting to be placed in a long-term care facility.

Secondly, the information given during the presentation was uninformative, poorly organized, dates were inaccurate, and there was no time allowed for a question period. The NPCO office has an open door policy, but with a group session we could have been able to ask and hear questions from each other that can be beneficial for all the students. This is a very important time in our education. We are anxious and excited for IP  because we are now able to take the knowledge we have been taught and put it into practice! We understand the challenges of finding placements, nonetheless, the NCPO staff are our voices and we do not feel confident in their efforts to support us during this time or in advocating our placements.

We ask you to sign this petition if you agree with the above information and want to support our class in creating a change.
