The petition
We hereby petition that the Santa Barbara Board of Supervisors and other responsible county officials to re-establish a designated area for clothing optional use on the county beach immediately north of the Ventura-Santa Barbara county line known locally as Bates Beach.
1. The designated area is to start at the rusty drain pipe about 2/3 mile north of the paved access ramp and extend for 1000 yards, as it did for thirty years between 1970 and 2000.
2. The beach will be posted with proper signage marking the beginning and ending of the clothing optional section so that visitors to the beach will know where the designated beach is located.
3. The Board and the County Counsel will direct all law enforcement agencies under their jurisdiction not to enforce Santa Barbara Santa Barbara Municipal Code Section 24-15 on this stretch of beach for a period of one year so that there is sufficient time to prove to the Supervisors and other County officials that a designated clothing optional section of beach:
Can be managed properly by the Nude Beach Alliance and other volunteers who promise to keep the beach environmentally clean, which it has not been for over five years, and
Can be seen as a benefit to the county as a good use for this otherwise greatly under-used beach, and
Can help reduce the existing crime rate on and near this beach, and
Can attract needed tourist dollars to the county of Santa Barbara.
After one year, we ask the Supervisors to reconvene to review the results of the past year and consider making the clothing optional section permanent.
We whose signatures are below agree with the above statement and urge the Board of Supervisors agree to its terms as soon as possible.
