| 193 | Scott Trimble | While challenging elected officials to engage citizens more in policy and decision-making is a nice idea, I believe that any real progress toward a more deliberative and participatory democracy will have to be built from the grassroots up. My campaign for Congress is focused on this very issue. I do not really expect to defeat the incumbent, but I hope to begin to build a pan-partisan organization of citizens that can exercise some influence over their elected representatives through continuous activity, public deliberation on any and all issues, and letting their elected officials know both the decisions reached through these deliberations, and that honoring those decisions can and will affect their own political futures. I challenge others to borrow any aspect of these ideas to build similar organizations in their own districts, counties and cities. |
