Nottingham has some fantastic Bicycle and Cycling Heritage: Raleigh Bicycles, Sturmey Archer Gears, Tom Simpson etc. Raleigh was the worlds leading Bicycle manufacturer for nearly 100 years and is still probably the most recognised Global brand of Bicycle. Bicycle Manufacturing has had a huge impact on Nottingham, yet there seems to be little or no civic pride in this heritage - contrast this with the much vaunted but historically dubious connection with a certain Mr R. Hood. It's true there is a small display of bicycles at a city museum, some obscure sculptures dotted around, and what remains of the Raleigh buildings - but these are all quite difficult to find. As a dedicated, Nottingham resident bike fan, I've spent many hours tracking down these remnants of Bicycle Heritage. For 2 years now, I've been showing others these attractions to others via the bike rides I lead. People are amazed when you show them this stuff is still out there - and disappointed to know that it required research to find it! Leicester is currently making the most of a recent historical discovery- c'mon Nottingham, don't bury your recent illustrious past - let's celebrate Nottingham Cycle City! (Visitor Centre, restoration of the remaining Raleigh Building, prominent iconic statute, etc, etc....?!)
