The student organization, Students Working For Equal Rights, is trying to get President Michaelson to speak out against an Arizon-style immigration bill coming to Florida; however, student support is essential! It is important for us to oppose racist policies because they can target current or prospective students! Florida legislatures have proposed Arizona-style immigration bills that mandate police visually determine who to suspect as an undocumented immigrant. There is no way to enforce such a law without relying on racial profiling, no matter what the language in the bill implies. Furthermore, the bills mandate higher penalties for immigrants convicted of the same crimes as citizens. The costly lawsuits faced by Arizona, coupled with the loss of profits to tourism and business sectors because of a national boycott, make it clear that it would be detrimental to pass such a law in Florida. SB 136's sponsor, Florida Sen. Mike Bennett, stated to reporters that he himself wasn't sure he would vote for the measure. Florida law professors, economists, tourism industry experts, and Latino Republican leaders have all spoken against the bill, citing costly economic, political, and moral consequences. Tell Florida not to pander to anti-immigrant factions, and vote no to an Arizona-style immigration bill.
