10 AnonymousI am Spanish and I see from Sunnyvale the situation in the Basque country as ridiculous. I think they should mend fences and live amicable playing jokes at each other, living happily ever after. Ibarretxe is a racist and should not be given pulpit in Stanford.
11 Victor AlvarezMr. Ibarretxe's pro-terrorist and undemocratic stance is unacceptable.

14 enrique zubiagaI am a basque. Mr. Ibarreche is not an innocent bystander in this drama, and he won´t be as long as he keeps happpily ignoring, because it suits him, what ETA is doing to the other half of the basque population, the non nationalists, whose rights of speech are non existant for fear of ETA... and also of Ibarreche´s governament reprisals. Germany circa 1933? No, Basque Country, January 2008.

19 Fernando García - Capelo VillalvaI was Born in the Basq Country and I know well how it works and I can say the nacionalist party uses all the institutions to achieve targets which are against 90% of the Spanish population and which are against a real democracy. Stanford University shouldn´t host this political act.

42 AnonymousAlbeit the Basque government is elected through a democratic process, there is no real electoral freedom at present in the Basque provinces due to fear. Expressing non-nationalist opinions entails a real danger, from getting ostracized to losing the job or -if done very prominently- even your life. The Basque nationalist government, in power since the advent of democracy in Spain, has kept a permanently ambiguous attitude towards the ETA terrorists. In fact, the REAL problem in the Basque Country is not only ETA, it is the PNV (Basque Nationalist Party) itself, and their scarcely hidden support of the terrorists in many indirect ways. Many of the PNV members (and specially their leaders) are, deep in their hearts, rather sympathetic to them because the ETA terrorists pursue the same aim -independence- as the PNV, ( this is why, by the way, the ETA terrorists have as targets members of the Socialist and Popular parties, NEVER nationalist politicians). There would be no problem in the Basque country if 90 or 95% voted PNV: it would be sufficient to let it become independent and resettle the 5-10% non-nationalist population in the rest of Spain. But only less than one half in the Basque provinces is nationalist, which makes the resettling unfeasible, and I am fully sympathetic towards the miserable life that non-nationalist people would have in an independent Basrque country under fully NAZionlist rule. It is difficult enough already without independence. So much so that about 300.000 people have left the Basque provinces since the PNV began governing them. Let Ibarreche speack at Stanford: freedom of opinion is essential. But do not be fooled by his suave, jesuitic manners. Do also invite a Basque politician of the Papular of Socialist parties (I suggest a very corageous lady, Maria San Gil of the Popular party) to present at Stanford the real, much darker side of the coin.

Muchas gracias.
