Name: Philippa Pigache on Jul 21, 2011Comments: Come on, this can't be a high-cost item for BBC radio. Writers and actors are modestly rewarded. And it is distinctive and perfectly suited to the medium. Often I stay glued to the driver's seat after parking in front of the house to hear the end of a story picked up driving home. There are so few outlets for short-stories these days. Please keep broadcasting.Flag

Name: Caroline Binch on Jul 21, 2011Comments: PLEASE rethink this cut back of the short story, it is treasured by me and many of my friends. If you must cut something for yet more news surely 'You and Yours', a daily hour of mostly tedium could be trimmed to sighs of relief all round. Keep creativity, its nurtures our writing talent as it entertains.Flag

Name: Jonathan Anderson on Jul 21, 2011Comments: There is so little opportunity left for the spoken word in a non-documentary setting. Please protect this priceless asset, and do not allow short stories on the radio to die... Such spoken fiction is hugely important - it allows listeners to use their imaginations, and indeed to be exposed to works by a huge variety of authors of whom they would otherwise be ignorant. It stimulates the imagination, instils a love of the spoken and written word, and allows aspiring and new authors both instruction in how to write, and the opportunity to gain an audience.Flag

Name: Eve Phillips on Jul 21, 2011Comments: Fifteen years ago, having my short stories accepted and read on my local radio station set me on my writing career - eight novels published so far and still going strong. Keep the short story slots on Radio 4 - in fact, why not increase them. The present day aspiring writers face impossible odds in attempting to get into print, so let's at least give them the chance to be judged and appreciated by a wider audience than a handful of publishers.Flag

2043
Name: Stephanie Green on Jul 21, 2011Comments: Please re-instate the Short Story slots. They are much appreciated by me as a writer and also as a listener. In fact, the BBC could take the lead in helping writers earn a living with their short stories, whilst writing a novel - in the same way John Updike used to support his family with short stories at the start of his career. The outlets for short stories has sadly diminished since those days. Radio 4 one of the few that kept faith. Promoting the form, rather than killing it off, would be more in keeping with Reith's ideals.Flag

Name: Tom Edwards on Jul 21, 2011Comments: It would a great shame for Radio Four to loose one of its most popular programmes on their shedule. The short story has been a part of the network for so long and enjoyed by its audience who come from all walks of life. I am all for change but to take away part of the culture and sheer enjoyment this programme brings to so many listeners is I feel quite wrong. Please think again. Best wishes, Tom Edwards.Flag

Name: Zina Rohan on Jul 21, 2011Comments: Given the amount of news and current affairs that already exists across all the BBC's radio and TV outlets, it seems extraordinary to extend WATO at the expense of short stories which are, arguably, more valuable - and possibly more valued in the long run than extra news. Merely reiterating that there have already been cuts to the commissioning of short stories and then apparently expressing support for them, is unimpressive. Please explain WHY WATO should be extended. This is a poor beginning for a new head of network.Flag
