Comments: The short story as an art form is so beautifully suited to radio that it would be a crying shame to reduce the number broadcast. Please don't.

Comments: As Radio 4 Extra has diminished the amount of read books broad cast weekly, it is even more important that Radio 4 retains its current output of short stories for listeners who appreciate literature. There is so much trivia and mindless time filling on radio and tv now, that we have to protest every time quality programs are under threat. Please listen BBC to your core listeners - we are the ones that have stayed loyal to you.

Comments: I value short stories on Radio 4 immensely, and listening to the styles of different authors has helped me to develop my writing style. Please do nothing to reduce book programmes and stories on Radio 4.

Comments: Please don't cut back the short story slots on BBC Radio 4. As a listener, I'd like to hear more not less. Radio is the perfect medium for short stories. There's such little support for this genre already - don't cut the little there is already.

Comments: Short stories intrigue and captivate listeners. They take you out of your daily worries and give you another perspective. They have a psychological value to the listener.

Comments: I would have thought the short story would be the most economical in the literary field to produce for radio. It is also wonderful to hear when read by an actor He/she also has the opportunity to show, over most other media, the voice at its best.

Comments: At a time when BBC2's drama budget has been increased by £10m, it seems a great shame to cut readings of short stories on Radio 3, which is a cost effective way to showcase new writing. I urge the Controller of Radio 4 to keep drama and creative writing at the forefront of Radio 4's output, and not to cut it nor hive it off to Radio 4 Extra.

Comments: As an actor and as Patron of the Anderida Writers Guild based in East Sussex I am unable to accept this decision. If it were not for creative writing, actors wouldn't be working and the short story is more often than not the way a writer begins to hone his or her craft. Please continue to give them a fair hearing!

Comments: News and comment, as offered by the World at One, are important, but other types of experience, particularly fiction, are equally vital in sustaining the rich, thoughtful and wise culture which we, as a nation and a world, so desperately need.

Comments: There is nothing more pleasurable than the perfect oasis of a short story on the radio every weekday afternoon. Listeners appreciate them; writers found their careers upon them. There are relatively inexpensive to produce, and yet are at the cultured heart of Radio 4. There are many other cuts that might be made with considerably less devastation to the cultural landscape. This cut makes no sense at all and feels like an act of cultural vandalism. There is too much misery in the world - much of which you focus upon - and not enough joy. Cut down news reportage rather than this.

Comments: The short story form is ideally suited to radio. The promise of a little sachet of regular pleasure from a variety of authors would bring radio audiences back and back. There should be more short stories on radio. (Perhaps this kind of cut is why I, for one, listen less and less to national stations).

Comments: This would be a great loss for listeners, writers and actors alike. The short story is an enjoyable format, favoured both by established and new authors. I would have thought 15 minute items wouldhave been welcomed with open arms by Radio 4 schedulers. Please don't reduce their numbers.

Comments: This is a most unfortunate decision. I look forward to the short story in the BBC. I have once been commissioned to write one specifically for radio. We have an entire campaign going to save the short story and the BBC has been one of the most interesting and solid supporters of the form. Don't DO THIS!
