Name: Sally O'Reilly on Jul 18, 2011Comments: Please keep up the good work: Radio Four's short story output has always been inspiring and imaginative and a way of connecting writers and listeners. The best short stories are perfect radio, and the more opportuntiies there are for new writers to be heard in this form, the more chance of finding the next Helen Simpson or even James Joyce. A good short story combines the simplicity of a folk tale with the lyricism and intensity of a poem. They are also perfectly suited to the new digitial publishing landscape.Flag

Name: Sarah Dunant on Jul 18, 2011Comments: When it comes to fiction radio excites and exercises the imagination in a way no other medium can manage. Nowhere is that more perfectly illustrated than the short story where, within 15 short minutes, one can be transported into a different world. It is a cheap yet invaluable example of radio at its best. It feels both mad - and sad - to think that radio 4 would somehow be better without it. Please reconsider.Flag

Name: Noel Williams on Jul 19, 2011Comments: Cutting the number of short stories is a backwards move. The BBC has a reputation for quality short story output, and is one of the few places where new writers might hope to get their first footing. Arguably, there should be more slots for the short story, perhaps using different story formats (e.g. a space for flash fiction).Flag

Name: Tanya Chan-Sam on Jul 19, 2011Comments: I am an avid online listener from South Africa. I listen to BBC Radio 3 and 4, in particular, the stories and drama. There is a worldwide audience who choose BBC radio above any other radio. At a time when short stories are flourishing, it is vitally important for the BBC to show pioneering enterprise by setting the finest example for others to emulate.Flag

Short Stories are how writers learn the craft of storytelling and through being aired on Radio 4 gain the confidence that their dream to be published can become a reality.Flag
