Name: Judith Arnopp on Jul 18, 2011Comments: it is immensely difficult for writers to have their work heard and the short story broadcasts provide an excellent method for them to be heard. The stories serve both writer and audience and provide a short period of enjoyment in an increasingly miserable world. A misery that cutting the short stories will add to.Flag

Name: Calum Kerr on Jul 18, 2011Comments: The short story is an incredibly important form. It has been sidelined for too long and is only now being respected as it should. This is not the time to take away one of the best and highest profile slots for this art form.Flag

Name: Chrissie Gittins on Jul 18, 2011Comments: The short story slot has already been cut down from 5 days to 3 days. How expensive can it be to produce these 15 minute slots? The fees to writers per minute are much less than for radio drama. Please reconsider and continue to support the short story and provide a significant and much appreciated outlet.Flag

Name: Stuart Evers on Jul 18, 2011Comments: As a lover of short fiction, even more than as a writer in the genre, this is a terrible, unfair and depressing announcement. Short stories need a place to breathe, to be given the import they deserve. To constrict them in this way is wrong-headed and downright insulting - particularly for those who love to listen to them. Please reverse this decision immediately.Flag

Name: Alison MacLeod on Jul 18, 2011Comments: After five years of inspired efforts by a few key literary organisations, including the BBC, the short story is truly beginning to thrive in the UK and to become its own distinctive force. I urge Radio 4 not to cut back on its story programming and not to send out such a negative message about the value of the short story. I also urge Radio 4 to retain its current number of short story 'slots' for the sake of UK writers, many of whom, like myself, have relied on the BBC's interest in short fiction at crucial stages of their careers. With the proposed 'stripping back' of investment in this vital literary form, the whole literary landscape in the UK will suffer, and culturally (and in human terms) we shall all be poorer for it.Flag

Name: Sarah Duncan on Jul 18, 2011Comments: Why make this decision? The short story is appreciated by listeners, supports writers - often at the start of their careers - and encourages the short story writing form. Radio 4 is one of the last outlets available. Plus it's cheap radio.Flag

Name: Martyn P Jackson on Jul 18, 2011Comments: Most new writers get their starts by writing short stories, The vast majority of established writers will have begun their careers by writing short stories. If new writers are to be encouraged, which is part of Radio 4's remit, it is essential that the current ammount of broadcast time devoted to this form is maintained, not cut. Name: Angela Jariwala on Jul 18, 2011Comments: Short stories provide a fantastic source of escape to the listener, to cut down to once a week is really quite tragic. Also, consider those less able people with learning difficulties who are unable to read and rely on their auditory skills to enjoy their literary passion.Flag
