Name: Cathie Little on Oct 6, 2011Comments: Northmoor Weir is one of the few remaining full width Paddle and Rhymer weirs left, not only the Thames, but in the UK and Europe. Having been upgraded in 1995 it should last at least another 40 years. The argument for replacement on H&S grounds has been contested by an expert. Whilst arguing that a mechanical weir will give them greater control of the water (contested), the EA have also admitted that the proposed new mechanical weir will have very little impact, if any, on flooding. £3,000,000 could be put to much greater use to prevent flooding elsewhere along the Thames. For all these reasons, and more, I fully support this campaign to save Northmoor Weir.Flag

Name: John McDonnell on Oct 7, 2011Comments: An absolutely obscene waste of public money. The reasoning is spurious and it is clear that any new weir control system cannot possibly inprove the situation in times of severe flooding, as the Thames water level is equivalent on both sides of the lock at those times............the barrier is bypassed and the lock and weir effectively cease to exist.Flag

Name: Mark Newby on Oct 8, 2011Comments: Automating the weir will cost a huge amount of public money - to achieve what? Exactly the same flow control results as when it is done - as it has been so professionally for decades - by a lock-keeper. Methinks the management and CEO of the EA need a few lessons in basic business management here.Flag
