Environment Agency Case Crumbles as Red Herring Swim the Thames

The fight to save Northmoor Weir intensified this week as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) responded to questions from Nicola Blackwood MP concerning the alleged need replace the weir on Health and Safety grounds.  The Northmoor Weir Campaign Team, established to save one of the nation’s last remaining full span paddle and rymer weirs, were amazed to discover that once again, the Environment Agency (EA) provided inaccurate and misleading information to the BBC. Mr Mike Hill, Chairman of the campaign team said, “On 25th October last year we were astonished by the level of inaccuracy on BBC Radio Oxford concerning the claims of increased flood protection for Northmoor if a mechanised weir was installed.  One hoped that lessons might be learnt concerning future communications.  It seems that this has not been the case!  Claims made in the same interview were recently refuted by HSE in a response to Ms Blackwood.  The HSE...

Interesting comments from the Environment Agency on BBC Radio Oxford 25/10/11

The Environment Agency, through it's Area manager, Innes Jones, placed on public record, some of the more controversial comments concerning the their strategy for the weir.  These views were flushed out by Phil Gayle in an interview on BBC Radio Oxford as a response to a phone interview with Mike Hill earlier in the day.   Whilst the response, at large, almost appears reasonable, we now have some of Innes Jones' answers as part of the public record where they cannot be denied in a future conversations.   ·         Mr Jones used the access issue, and the fact that Appleton houses would not flood from the Thames to try and make vehicle movements the main objection of the campaign and suggest this is why Noorthmoor have a different view... because the have no lorries!  This is a deflection from the £3m uneccesary spend...
