We, the undersigned, hereby submit this petition to the Los Angeles Police Protective League, thecollective bargaining unit representing Los Angeles Police Department rank-and-file officers. We respectfully request that the union take the official public position that its members should not protect the "free speech" of neo-nazis at the rally planned for April 17, 2010 at Los Angeles City Hall on the grounds that: *Death threats and verbal assaults of the type Nazis make in their public statements are not protected by the First Amendment freedom of speech; *Assemblies of racial hate groups are not peaceable and do not enjoy the protection of the First Amendment freedom of assembly; and *the officers of the LAPD have an interest in maintaining a positive relationship with the members of the community who do not sanction this abuse of the rights of speech and assembly for their own safety and that of the public.
