The petition
Governor Schwarzenegger
Listen to us - NO MORE SLOTS! please!
Santa Ynez, Calif (March 10) - Local residents of the Santa Ynez Valley have organized a petition asking Governor Schwarzenegger for NO MORE SLOTS! Please! And to Please! stop selling out small, rural communities for the sake of potential gambling dollars in the State's depleted coffers. The price to pay is too high.
A potential 5000 more slot machines could be placed within 1 mile of three elementary schools and a high school. The casino already has 2000 slots and is extremely successful. The largest casino in Las Vegas has 3000 slots. Enough is enough.
More slots translate to: TRAFFIC (25,000 TO 50,000 CARS per day), Increased crime (larceny, robbery, assault, drugs and others crimes) and will decrease property values. Casinos attract Gamblers...not tourists. Gambling costs our community in many ways.
We are standing up and asking our Governor to please not compromise our future and the future of our children to fix a short-term budgetary problem. This will only create long-term problems that will forever haunt all of us. The Attorney General Report shows for every dollar the State receives in gambling revenue, it COSTS the taxpayers $3 in “cost-creating activities” such as crime, bankruptcies and other byproducts of the gambling industry.
Our community is being exploited by greed and we are saying please stop this insanity. Having 7000 slots machines in our Valley will destroy our family friendly community. We have only 23,000 men, women and children in this Valley. Increasing the slots to 7000 means at least 20,000 more gamblers into our Valley every day. This is fact not fiction.
Substantial advertising revenue has persuaded some of the local media to convert interviews about the conflict between the competing interests into what amounts to infomercials for the development interests. In addition, the politicians have been influenced with campaign money and the promise of gambling revenues.
This is not just a Santa Ynez Valley issue or a State issue. This is a national issue about the rights of Americans that are being silenced. This is an issue that has been distorted by runaway “political correctness” and fearful politicians.
Valley residents opposed to the expansion of the Casino are taking it to the streets and ask everyone in favor of keeping our community safe to say No More Slots! by signing our petition. The petition is available at many businesses and parking lots around the County. Also available online at www.nomoreslots.com. For a quick and easy way - send an email with your name and address at mypetition@nomoreslots.com stating your approval.
The community will rally soon to stand up and be heard by our elected representatives. Stay tuned for our march in March. The location will be announced at our Town Meeting on March 20, 2007 at the Vets Hall in Solvang.
