The petition
The release of the video game Unreal Tournament 3 http://www.unrealtournament3.c... has brought end users (the players) to face what is seemingly a Gestapo-type scenario where IGN (GameSpy www.gamespy.com/) may possibly be playing the hand that is stopping the Linux version of the dedicated server for this game due to what has been labeled legal reasons.
The players playing the game and the people that run the many game servers for the Unreal Tournament series were looking forward to the Linux release that was promised by EPIC Games, but it’s still nowhere in sight and the community has been kept in the dark from knowing.
There are many users that bought this game with the understanding that a Linux version would be available for a server version, and as many people prefer to play the Linux boxes over windows and more importantly most game server companies out there that are reputable and affordable mainly use Linux OS for their servers.
Since EPIC Games many times stated "there will be a Linux version" pretty much since day one with the news of UT3 and especially within the final months before its retail sale, they have created an expectation for everyone and to not fulfill this at this time would make their credibility plumit.
As it stands, it looks like there will not be a Linux release anytime soon and possibly may never be one, anyone who bought the game should be able to return it for a full refund as the general population was misled in the workings of the client/server relationship options of this title.
Maybe it's not EPICS fault or decision on this, but it is their game so ultimately this is their responsibility and it shall fall on them solely until it is officially announced why or who is not letting the release the Linux version happen as it should.
One fact though, GameSpy is forcing UT players to have to login to GameSpy to play the UT3 title which is non-conducive to the meaning "free play". We bought the game, we pay for our monthly internet access, we pay for the servers, and this should be all that is required. If GameSpy goes down we cannot play the game at all regardless. We should not be relying on a third party company for the server browser.
EPIC needs to re-think and re-neg their contract with IGN (GameSpy) or probably lose an enormous amount of their fan base which means loss of business ultimately.
I urge you all to sign this to show how much this will hurt the people, the game and the developer if GameSpy is allowed to control the server software versions of this game.
