Name: Elizabeth Addison on Aug 8, 2006Comments: A parenting guru type named Gina Ford is threatening to sue one of the websites I use, mumsnet, on most unfair grounds, from what I have seen. I object strongly to her heavy handed tactics and hope there will be a way to change the law to prevent such unnecessary curbs on freedom of speech online. It seems ridiculous that what would be acceptable criticism in e.g. a letter to the editor of a newspaper is unacceptable online and would result in the owners of the site being sued. Meanwhile the whole forum community on mumsnet is feeling upset and bullied into silence by Ms Ford. Very sadly, I honestly suspect that her crusade may be fuelled by mental ill health leading to her finding criticism impossible to tolerate. However, I would prefer her to seek help for this rather than try and shut down a much loved website forum.Flag

The action being threatened is nothing more than playground bullying and its a good job the parenting website has commited members to STOP her in her tracks.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Aug 8, 2006Comments: I believe individuals should have the right to express their own personal opinions based on our own experiences and be free to discuss the effectiveness of any "experts" parenting techniques or any other topics in a fair way on a Chat Forum. The the hosts of internet forums should not be threatened with legal action over the views or opinions of their members.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Aug 8, 2006Comments: Libel is a law which is only for the use of rich people anyway (there is no legal aid available for it) and should be abolished as it breaches the principle of equal access to the law for all. But the way it applies to the internet, is simply mad - it is the equivalent of closing down a pub because the regulars have passed adverse comment. It has to change.Flag

Name: Kirsty Shaw on Aug 8, 2006Comments: Gina Ford should be ashamed of herself. She is trying to close down a parenting website because some of their members don't agree with her methods. She thinks she can get away with it because this website has no sponsorship or affiliations and is run by a few mums for all parents in need of support. This is part of a much wider issue for internet forums as there is no law protecting them. People with money can sue the hosts for libel if they don't like the comments from members. Something has to be done to change the lawFlag

To attempt to stifle such opinions in such a bullying manner is just wrong in my opinion.Flag
